Gerry Coogan songs

And so we continue our quest to merge reggae with Beatlemusic. This jolly singalong has its origins in a rhythm from an old Janet Kay tune that Kyle and I both liked immensely. There's a whole lot more variety to reggae rhythms than most folk probably realise and we trust that this tune will provide evidence of that.

Once we were satisfied with the drum track, we wondered what the Beatles might have done with it during the sessions for Abbey Road. Hence, high three part harmonies and jangly guitar arpeggios played a large part in the writing. Then there comes a point where we can simply let the song go its own way and trust that it will emerge on the other side as Windowman music!

The chorus is cunningly calculated to become an anthem for football crowds to chant as they exhort their heroes to go for glory in the dying minutes of the game. ("We're never going to do it if we're not going to do it now...") In a perfect world, it would also be the last tune that the Rothschilds were ever to hear prior to being dragged to their doom by a righteous lynch-mob. We can but hope...

Kyle does the drums, bass and rhythm guitars; I'm on keys, lead guitars and vocals. It was recorded on Cubase SX and Reason; guitars used were Kyle's Variax 300, a Takamine acoustic and my Fender Strat; keyboard sounds all came from Roland XPs and soft synths; all vocals were recorded through an AKG 1000S; plectrums were round at one end and pointy at the other; cigarette brands smoked were Richmond (Kyle) and Berkeley (me); tea was made with Nambarrie teabags and full cream milk. The teapot should be warmed up before boiling water is added to the teabags. It should then be allowed to brew for several minutes on a medium heat.

Thank you for listening.

    G
We’re never going to do it
                         Am    C
if we’re not gonna do it now
